每年4月25日是紐澳軍人節，澳大利亞與新西蘭兩國的公眾假期，源於1915年第一次世界大戰。土耳其格利波里戰役（長松之戰 GALLIPOLI）以聯軍失敗告終。新西蘭和澳洲軍隊傷亡慘重，其中，新西蘭傷亡7,500人（陣亡2,721人，當年紐國一百萬人口）；澳洲傷亡2.6萬人（陣亡7,818人）。
一戰期間在海外作戰的新西蘭軍隊占全國總人口的10%，是各個參戰國中死傷率最高的國家。
